Waterstone's is a Bookseller, here in the UK. They have put together
a list of "The Books of the Century". They claim that
these are the best books of the century. I certainly have my doubts,
since only one of the ones I list are present on their list (a
Sci-Fi book). The ones that I have read have been excellent, with
one exception ("so it goes!"). I have read 34 of the
books, and watched (in movie form) a further 15. That makes my
total 49 only, just one shy of the 50 mark. Anyone do any better?
I am sure you are out there, and I know who I would bet on. Although
I admit that I defy anyone to tell me that they have actually
read "Paddy Clark Ha Ha Ha" by Roddy Doyle, or why Mr.
Doyle deserves mention twice on the list. Finally, the order itself
is a complete mystery to me. Any help to clarify it would be appreciated.
Nic Dent has since discovered that the list is a result of individuals (British) voting for what they thought was the best book of the century. This explains the somewhat bizarre and populist nature of the list. I must admit, Tolkien being that high up there (numero uno) brings a warm glow to my heart regarding my fellow readers.
